Today is the 100th anniversary of World War I and Faith Baptist Church believes that while we should always honor and respect our armed forces, Veterans Day presents an opportunity for us to show special honor to those who serve the nation.

Sunday at 11:00 a.m., Faith Baptist Church held a special, commemorative service to honor men and women in the armed forces.

The church service was followed by a special flag ceremony including a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps to honor veterans who have passed away.

Walt Schumacher, a veteran who served in the Vietnam War and a machine gunner in the first cavalry division helped plan this event.

Schumacher says it is important for the earlier and later generations to know what family members and others have gone through as a veteran.

“I think a very important reason for the veterans to pass it on down it’s so a generational effect such as yourself can pass it on to other people such as your children and your grandchildren.”

Schumacher hopes that the younger generation will aspire to learn about experiences from family members in the military and pass those experiences down to others to keep their story alive.

All veterans in attendance will receive a commemorative gift.
