Safety tips for trick or treaters and parents on Halloween

Halloween, a night of fright and fun for ghouls and gals of all ages. But you want to take some safety precautions to keep it fun.

According to Cpt. Mario Luna, from the city of Imperial Police Department, trick or treaters should make themselves visible to drivers.

” So trick or treaters need to have a flashlight or some type of glowstick and possibly reflector so they can make sure that the drivers can see them in dark hours,” said Luna.

Luna added that drivers are also being asked to keep an eye out for the little ones.

“The speed limit in a residential area is 25 miles per hour. But we ask that the citizens try to keep it under that. Make sure that they’re being defensive drivers looking out left and right for trick or treaters that might be on the street,” Luna said.

Parents should map out safe routes for their children.

Luna said, “Parents want to check to see if there’s any predators in the area. They can go to Megan’s law on the internet and verify any addresses or locations where there might be a sexual predator.”

All candy received on Halloween should be inspected.

“They want to make sure that none of the candy were tampered with, opened or un-packaged. If that’s the case then discard the candy and only eat the ones that are packaged,” said Luna.
