Local fire fighters honored in helping fight Mendocino Complex fires
After battling the Mendocino Complex wildfires this summer, over 40 local firefighters were recognized for their heroic efforts.
Firefighters in Imperial County were part of a regional strike team called to face the largest pair of wildfires in California’s history.
El Centro Fire Chief Kenneth Herbert was on the front line facing the blaze and recalls the bravery and courage of those who put their lives on the line.
“There were some challenging situations. There were some life-threatening situations that we found ourselves in and these guys just performed above and beyond. I’m just continuously impressed by the guys that I work with and the work that they do,” said Herbert.
Members of the strike team have to be ready at a moment’s notice.
Herbert said, “There’s a strong sense of commitment to the firefighter community. So we go when we’re called, we don’t usually ask questions.”
City officials commend those who went above the call of duty.
George Nava, the Mayor of Brawley, said, “I think it’s also important to recognize the hard effort and the work that they put in. In helping protect lives and property throughout the state of California.”
State officials continue to work to help support firefighters in the battle against wildfires.
Senator Ben Hueso said, “The state of California also has a budget and we allocated more resources to make Cal Fire more ready. We’re buying fire trucks, we’re buying equipment.”
The regional strike team has been deployed six times already this year.
