Sex offender arrested after illegally crossing border fence

Fifty-six-year-old Jose Luis Romero-Lara was arrested after illegally entering the United States Sunday night, according to El Centro Sector Border Patrol.

Agents observed the man crossing the international border fence three miles west of the Calexico port of entry and transported him to the El Centro station for processing.

After agents conducted a record check they discovered that Romero-Lara is a convicted sex offender with a misdemeanor conviction for annoying or molesting children out of Santa Ana. o

Romero was sentenced to 60 days in prison and was also given 24 months of probation.

CBP said he will be criminally prosecuted for re-entry after removal as a convicted sex offender.
