State proposition could help save Salton Sea

Prop 68, a bond for the environment, parks, and waters will contribute greatly to the restoration process of the Salton Sea if it passes.

However, it will increase the state debt by four billion dollars.

District 4 Supervisor Ryan Kelley said it’s worth every penny.

“This is the moment to see if the California voter is going to put the obligation into a check. And put the money into the improvement projects that need to go into the Salton Sea,” Kelley said.

Kelley said now is the time to act. “This is very important to us. And to our livelihood. The impacts of not addressing this have already been felt. And our time is short. We need to see action. We need to see tangible results on the ground.”

One valley environmental advocate said the bond is a small price to pay if we can extend our way of life. “You know, paying a small tax, versus an enormous benefit that will come here, is really a small price to pay for health. We don’t wanna end up in a valley that essentially cuts our life short,” said Jose Luis Olmedo Velez, executive director of Comite Civico Del Valle.

Being able to restore the Salton Sea will change lives in the Imperial Valley. But, it would add a burden in tax liabilities to the states financial future. The fate of the proposition will be decided next week.

Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia will hold a rally this Saturday to further inform the residents of the local benefits of Prop 68 in the city of Brawley at the Alyce Gereaux Water Park from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
