Yuma preschool participates in active shooter training

After yet another school shooting the same disputes spark all over again. Do we arm teachers? Should guns be banned?

While the left and right exchange a war of words and some students urge gun control, Casa De Niños Preschool in Yuma recognizes that another shooting could happen at given time.

From how to get away from a shooter to physically confronting someone with a gun, that is what is being taught at the daycare center.

It’s a realistic training scenario that mimics real-world events like the deadly Florida school shooting that happened on Valentine’s Day. Eric F rost of Eric Frost Consulting is leading this drill specifically designed for an active shooter scenario inside the preschool.

Frost said training allows people under attack to fight back if it gets to that point, as well as knowing how to react when you freeze. The training also teaches them how to get out of the building if it’s safe.

Teachers are many times the first layer of defense for their students during shootings.

“This is such an innocent environment. This on a daily basis, we have just nothing but our roles here. Our job is perfect. We just deal with children and so we don’t think of the negative. We should think of the negative because that way we are prepared for it. That’s not something we want to do,” said director and owner of Casa De Ninos Sabrina Seale.

Faculty were reminded about the importance of communication and teamwork when keeping themselves and their kids safe.
