Fatal collision in Superstition Mountains results in one death

One man is dead after a fatal rollover crash that happened over the weekend in the Superstition Mountains in El Centro.

The California Highway Patrol said Sunday at approximately 11 a.m. a 2006 Suzuki Quad approached a drop-off at an unknown speed. In the back seat was Tiffany Pimienta and in front the driver Cezar Rosas.

For an undetermined reason, officers said Rosas failed to reduce the speed of the vehicle in time to avoid the drop-off and resulted in losing control of the vehicle, sending them straight down and causing the vehicle to topple over.

CHP said the vehicle landed on Rosas at the bottom of the drop-off. Rosas was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pimienta suffered major injuries and was flown to Desert Regional Hospital.

Officers said both victims were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. The collision is still under investigation and DUI has not been determined as a factor in the crash at this time.
