Camp Pendleton Sailor dies after helicopter blade accident

A sailor has died after suffering injuries from a helicopter blade at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base near San Diego.

The sailor has been identified as Navy Lt. James A. Mazzuchelli. He was a flight surgeon assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39, stationed at MCAS Camp Pendleton.

A native of Orange Park, Florida, Mazzuchelli commissioned in the Navy in June 2010.

The Marine Corps said the accident happened Wednesday night.

The sailor was hit on the deck by a spinning tail rotor blade of a UH-1Y Venom.

The sailor died at a hospital shortly before 6 a.m. on Saturday.

The accident is still under investigation.
