News of American athletes acting unruly and committing crimes overseas would be more shocking if it were a new occurrence. But, when news of three college basketball stars being arrested in China came out most people on social media were disappointed rather than shocked. Earlier this month UCLA was in China for their season opener against Georgia Tech.
At some point the players were allowed to visit a local high end outlet store and that’s where according to authorities Liangelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill decided to steal sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store. Both of the school’s buses were searched and the merchandise worth upwards of a $1,000 a pair was recovered. The three players were then remanded to their hotels.
If convicted for shoplifting they could have faced ten years in prison. Thankfully, for the three players, President Donald J. Trump was visiting with China President Xi Jinping and it’s said that President Trump asked for help with the matter. The three were then allowed to return to the U.S.; no word yet if the NCAA will take any action against the players.
