Second-Alarm fire burns due to cattle feed

Firefighters in Imperial County are continuing to watch after a fire that broke out earlier this morning.

The second-alarm fire broke out in the eleven o’clock hour at Phillips Cattle Company in El Centro.

News 11 was first on the scene and spoke to firefighters to find out what caused the flames.

“The fire was started by some equipment that was moving some hay product; the hay caught fire as well as some cattle feed. We’ve called additional units out to assist from El Centro, Brawley, Calexico and Imperial County units. Right now we have the fire contained, we’re just going to let some of the hay burn off,” said Tony Rohoutas, Imperial County Fire Chief.

Power was shut off to protect the power lines, the owners were able to feed and water the cattle as needed and no animals were injured in the process.
