Fallen officers remembered in honor of Peace Officer Memorial Day

Today is Peace Officer Memorial Day, the national day of remembrance was proclaimed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

News 11’s Nico Payne spoke to authorities on why this day is important and what it means to them.

“We want the survivors to know that we are thinking of them, not only during this time but during the entire year,” said Sergeant Shaw Angula with the California Highway Patrol.

This is the ninth commemoration of the event and it is held at the County Courthouse in El Centro.

“The month of May is actually nationwide, we honor all fallen officers throughout the nation,” added Angulo

There are 39 flags to represent the fallen officers in Imperial County alone who have paid the ultimate price. And along with the flag is a plaque that shares a story of each fallen hero.

“We always put our lives in danger so it’s nice to know that not only will the family remember us but also the public, and also the individuals who represent us in our agency,” said Sergeant Edgar Quinones with Imperial County Sheriff’s Office.

The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office will have a total of six officers being represented in the memorial today.

“This year we have officers that are standing in for the fallen officers, we’ll have six officers standing for them, representing them on the steps of the courthouse. We’ll also have the honor guard the imperial county sheriff’s honor guard will be working with the border patrol honor guard and other agencies,” explained Quinones.

“That is part of our everyday life, remembering and recognizing the sacrifice of other agents before us. And also it’s a sign of the dedication that they had towards the agency, towards our nation,” said Agent Alessio Faccin with the El Centro Border Patrol Sector.

“We have all sworn to and taken an oath to lay down our life even if it is for that of a stranger. But please know as a law enforcement officer it is our honor to serve the people of Imperial County,” explained Angulo.
