IV residents react to presidential race

The presidential election results surprised several residents in Imperial County.

Their reactions reflect the latest election numbers in Imperial County. Of all the votes counted so far, Hillary Clinton took 68 percent of the vote. Donald Trump was only favored by 27 percent of voters in Imperial County.

Steve Honse, El Centro resident, said he didn’t think Trump would get so far. Honse said, “I’m stunned. Like it’s even hard to say the words President Trump. I think he was the better choice but I didn’t think that he had a prayer from the time he announced I thought it was a joke.”

Another resident we spoke with, Greg Gelman from El Centro, said he was surprised but believes this country needs something different. Gelman said, “I think we needed a change, I’m still shocked even in local politics we’re in shock as well and I just think people needed a change and I think moving forward it will be positive.”

Brawley resident Esther Martinez said she’s not sure what the future holds. “A lot of uncertainty just afraid of what the future tells for us and our children.”

El Centro resident Abundio Rosales said he did not like Trump’s rhetoric when it came to the Hispanic community. Rosales said, “I’m not happy with the results, I’ve lived in this country for many years and he spoke very bad about Hispanics.

One thing everyone we spoke to did agree on was they believe now more than ever the country needs to be united. They also hope Trump can show he can be presidential.

The presidential results reflected for Imperial County are the unofficial final results. 42,814 ballots were cast in the county.
