City Council race in Wellton

Wellton residents are soon deciding who the next member of their town council. Residents are voting between the current mayor pro-tempore and a successful small business owner.

Vickie Bornt, is the town’s current mayor pro-tem. Bornt says she has lived in Yuma County since 1989. She and her husband worked at Yuma Proving Ground. After retiring in 2009, Bornt says she decided to get more involved in the community. She has been a member of the town council since 2013.

“I’ve got no other agenda that I’m pursuing other than wanting to do what’s best for the Town of Wellton, which both my husband and I love,” said Bornt.

Bornt says she has worked on several projects to better the community. If elected, Bornt says she wants to work on getting more resources for the Police and Fire departments.

“What we need is somebody who knows how the town works and has the experience and the connections with other organizations and communities, and at the state level, to pull things together,” said Bornt.

Michelle Jones, is a realtor and successful business owner.

“I was born and raised in Wellton. My roots are in this town. I’ve raised my family here and I love the small community feel,” said Jones.

Jones says she’s running because she loves her community and feels it’s time to get more involved. If elected, Jones says she will work to see more economic growth in Wellton. Jones says some of her ideas include more real estate developments to attract winter visitors.

“I need to see the small businesses. I need to see what we can do to get them to stay alive and prosper and succeed to build our community and our little town,” said Jones.
