Topic of the Day: Statue of Liberty turns 130

She calls the east coast home, welcoming newcomers to America; this week the Statue of Liberty turns 130. Given to the United States as a gift of friendship from the people of France the 151 foot statue rests on Liberty Island just south of Ellis Island.
During the turn of the century the U.S. saw an influx of immigrants who saw the statue as a welcoming beacon; more than 12 million immigrants came to Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954.
The Statue of Liberty is described as the country’s universal symbol of freedom and democracy; forged onto her tablet are the words “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. On her other hand she extends a torch which lights the path to freedom.
