Assembly Member Garcia in Calexico discusses New River

California State Assembly Member Eduardo Garcia hosted a meeting with Imperial Valley residents in Calexico on Wednesday evening to talk about progress on the New River cleanup project.

Garcia said the infrastructure is currently being designed and documentation is being approved to begin construction.

He said close to one and a half million dollars is allocated to clean the New River. Garcia said after so many years of neglect, work on the New River is closer than ever. He credits local organizations for making this finally happen. He said local organizations have persistently worked to put environmental issues at the forefront of state officials’ attention.

“There’s a public health problem. There’s an environmental problem and there’s an economic problem by doing nothing with the new river. All of those three combined most definitely make it a priority for me and my counterpart in the senate,” Garcia said.

Assembly Member Garcia said actual work on the new river may start in about two years.
