Hit-and-run, suspect flees on foot

CALEXICO, Calif. – A neighborhood is concerned over and increase in accidents happening on a busy street after a hit and run occurred in the Kennedy Gardens neighborhood.

On Tuesday during the early morning hours is when the incident took place. Calexico Police confirmed that a driver plowed into a yard fence on Rockwood Avenue and Espinoza Street, then took off on foot.

Our news team spoke to the neighborhood watch captain who says this has been a problem for the community.

“The last accident, a teacher that lives right here, got hit right here and left there and I think the vehicle also left. So it is a big problem, if you see the school is right behind us,” said Javier Gonzalez, Kennedy Gardens Neighborhood Watch Captain.

Schools have added crosswalks and cross guards, but the community says more needs to be done.

“Our new chief, when he came in, he marked something in the middle, if you can see. He said that a median would be nice right here, a median. And a recommendation if we could have a little “glorieta” where we can plant plants in the middle. It would look nice for the neighborhood and probably ease traffic,” added Gonzalez.

Just down the road from the accident there are barriers installed in front of homes for protection. Our team was told this specific property did not have those barriers installed because the yard gate didn’t allow the city to do so.

Gonzalez says the community will have to discuss what to do from here.

Calexico Police say they believe they know who the driver might have been but are not releasing any information pending an investigation.
