King Charles addresses Congress

WASHINGTON (KYMA, NBC) - King Charles is addressing a joint meeting of Congress Tuesday afternoon.

According to NBC News, the speech focuses on the alliance between the United States (U.S.) and the United Kingdom (U.K.) and their role in global security and prosperity while voicing caution about the U.S. acting alone.

NBC News says the king will also address the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner from over the weekend in a sign of solidarity and support.

This is part of the British royals' four-day state trip to mark the 250th anniversary of America's independence.

Earlier in the day, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump formally welcomed Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, at the White House, with President Trump and Charles meeting in the Oval Office while the first lady and the Queen participated in an educational event.

Prior to his address, the king met with congressional leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, on Capitol Hill.

Charles is the second British sovereign to address Congress, with his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, speaking to both chambers back in 1991.

The day prior, the First Couple and the British royals attended a garden party at the British Embassy.

The visit has unfolded against disagreements over the U.S.-Israeli War on Iran after the president repeatedly criticized the U.K. for declining to support the offensive.
