Yuma Police department gives out free steering wheel locks

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY)- Yuma Police Department gave out free steering wheel locks to the public. This event is took place from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Target at Yuma Palms mall.

Christina Fernandez, the public affairs officer at the Yuma police department says they held this event to "help prevent them to from becoming a victim of a crime".

YPS says vehicles that are stolen are usually taken south of the border.

Detective Ernesto Prieto says "by the time that the owner recognizes that his vehicle is gone sometimes it’s too late”.

Fernandez says these steering wheel locks work in two different ways.

First, by preventing thieves from using steering the wheel, and second, they're a visual deterrent.

Fernandez explains “everyone that’s a victim of a crime typically its something that occurred because the individual who committed the crime saw it as an easy opportunity” These steering wheels locks take away that opportunity.

YPD also recommends parking in well lit areas, keeping your valuables out of sight, and always locking your doors.
