SDSU Imperial Valley is launching a new Public Health major

The new major will be coming to the Imperial Valley campus in Fall 2024

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The new upcoming major, Public Health, will have an emphasis on Environmental Health and will be coming to the San Diego State University (SDSU) Imperial Valley campus.

Environmental Health is a branch of public health that studies include biological, chemical, and physical factors in natural and built environments and how it impacts human health.

Students will be able to learn how to help prevent injuries and diseases and promote healthier air, soil water, homes, and workplaces.

Part of the program will also have students partake in an internship with a regional agency or a research project in the border field of public health in air pollution measurement, water pollution, toxicology, environmental justice, and or occupational health.

“So now that we’ll have four Phd’s specializing in public health, we hope to have a direct impact in our community in preparing for public health expert leaders for our region. We have taken an approach of growing your own, so at this moment, San Diego State Imperial Valley has made a significant contribution to growing your own teacher, our law enforcement officers. Now we’ll have an opportunity to grow our own nurses, our own public health majors, and public health leaders that can work in the county,” said Guillermina Gina Núñez-Mchiri, Dean of SDSU Imperial Valley.
