AAA predicts record number of domestic travelers over Memorial Day weekend

(NBC, KYMA) - AAA is predicting a record number of domestic travelers over the Memorial Day weekend.

The organization says a record-setting 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between Thursday, May 21, 2026 and Monday, May 25, 2026.

39 million are expected on the roads, and another 3.66 million will hit the skies to reach their destinations for the unofficial start of summer.

AAA's Robert Sinclair says, "Despite substantially higher fuel prices than last year, many people continue to prioritize holiday leisure travel."

With a record number of travelers expected on the roads this holiday weekend, AAA reminds drivers to put safety first, saying slow down, move over and drive sober.

Also, if anyone is driving, they are urged to check out their car to make sure it's ready, including tire pressure and engine fluids.

Last Memorial Day weekend, the organization says it responded to over 300,000 emergency roadside assistance calls nationwide.
