Dry brush and unattended stoves can lead to a big blaze
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA,KECY) - Low humidity, high winds and negligence can result in consequences if proper fire safety is not practiced.
Green grass that has now turned to brush is at a high risk for flames because of unattended campfires or carelessly discarded cigarettes.
Many residents have resorted to cooking at home more often due to the stay-at-home orders in place. Mike Erfert from the Yuma Fire Department advises caution and full attention while cooking.
"The number one place for a fire to start in the home is in the kitchen. The number one place in the kitchen is on top of the stove. And the number one reason is unattended cooking," said Erfert, "We have a saying and that’s “'Watch what you heat.'"
Consequences for negligence or illegal burning can be greater, especially during this time. Make sure to check local fire restrictions before heading to the desert.
