States around the country suspend gas and diesel taxes to help Americans

(CBS, KYMA) - Many states around the country are suspending their gas and diesel taxes to give some help to Americans' wallets.

The national average of a gallon of gas is $4.41 while diesel is $6.40, according to AAA. Both significantly higher than this time last year.

In California, some trucking companies are buying electric trucks as a detour around diesel prices.

Down in Georgia, third-generation farmer Lee Nunn has equipment burning 80 gallons of diesel an hour for eight to 10 hours a day.

Nunn estimated he's spending an extra $100,000 on fuel this year.

"It's disheartening to be honest. We work all year to do what we do on the farm, and to have an added cost right at the end of the year, our crop year while we're harvesting, it's very hard to swallow," Nunn expressed.

Nunn is grateful Georgia suspended its diesel tax for October, but said costs have also gone up on seed, fertilizer, and other supplies.

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump said the Iran war, now in its seventh month, will be over soon, and promised gasoline prices will "drop like a rock."
