Primary elections underway in four states

(CBS, KYMA) - It's Primary Day in four states as voters are heading to the polls Tuesday in Alaska, California, Florida and Wyoming to choose nominees in key state and congressional races.

The Sunshine State is expected to be the most closely watched, with Trump-endorsed Congressman Byron Donalds running to become the Republican nominee in a wide-open governor's race.

When it comes to Congress, Democratic socialist State Rep. Angie Nixon faces retired Army Col. Alex Vindman to see which Democrat will go up against incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody (R-Fla.).

Sen. Moody was appointed to finish out the term of Secretary of State Marco Rubio after he left the Senate to join the Trump Administration.

Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) is also hoping to come out on top, while facing a congressional probe alleging sexual and financial misconduct. He has denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, incumbent Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) is vying to best a crowded field to win a newly redrawn heavily black voting district.

Experts say Florida's new congressional map may be confusing to some voters.

"Both Democrats and Republicans should be motivated to go out and vote for their candidates," said Sean Foreman, professor at Barry University. "Almost every voter's member of Congress may have changed due to the redistricting. So they may not be sure which district they're voting for."

In California's 14th district, voters will decide the outcome of a nonpartisan special run-off election to replace former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.).

Former Rep. Swalwell resigned earlier this year amid sexual assault allegations, which he denies.
