Thursday marks eight years since President Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh for SCOTUS

WASHINGTON (CBS, KYMA) - On July 9, 2018, Brett Kavanaugh was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) by President Donald Trump during his first term in office.

He filled the role vacated by Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Shortly after his nomination, Christine Blasey Ford accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her in the early 1980s. The Senate Judiciary Committee held a supplemental hearing over Ford's allegations.

Afterward, it voted 11-10 along party lines to advance the confirmation to a full Senate vote, and on October 6, 2018, the Senate confirmed Kavanaugh by a vote of 50-48.

Kavanaugh was sworn in as the 114th justice of the Supreme Court on the evening of October 6, 2018, and a public ceremony was held at the White House on October 8, 2018.

Upon joining SCOTUS, Kavanaugh became the first Supreme Court justice to hire an all-female team of law clerks.
