State and federal lawmakers react to House Republicans passing DHS funding bill

(KYMA, NBC) - Lawmakers across the country are sharing their reaction to House Republicans passing a DHS funding bill.

The bill, worth $70 billion, passed in the House 214-212, with Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-Calif.) voting against it, and it's being sent to President Donald Trump's desk.

Following the vote, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) spoke with the media, celebrating the bill's passage.

"Once and for all, and we are pleased to tell you that we will be funding for the next three years our border security and immigration enforcement. These are critical agencies and critical functions of the federal government to state the obvious and it's rather shocking to us that the democrats wanted none of it.

We have three full years of funding now and there's not a democrat here who voted to support that but what we've done now by funding it for three years, we've taken away their ability to cut that funding, to block that funding or to take hostage the funding for the remainder of the Trump Administration.

We're grateful we're not going to have to deal with this problem for the next three years but this is a cautionary tale, for the next time we've got to do this funding we've got to make sure that it's bipartisan it should be it's a matter of commonsense and decency."

In addition, Rep. Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.) released a statement saying in part, "There always seems to be money for Trump’s mass deportation agenda, but never enough for the needs of working people...The fear and chaos we're seeing in our neighborhoods, the separation of families, and the abduction and removal of DACA recipients and others who are lawfully present in this country are all the direct result of Republicans continuing to pour billions into this lawless agency."

Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-Calif.) also issued the following statement sharing his reaction to the bill's passage:

"It is deeply disappointing that House Republicans just passed a bill to give ICE another 70 billion dollars. This is funding for an out-of-control agency that has used violence and brutality against non-criminal immigrants and United States citizens, with no guardrails to protect the American people.

Not one requirement to remove masks. Not one requirement to wear identification. Not one requirement to use body cameras. Not one requirement to obtain a judicial warrant. Not one requirement for de-escalation training.

None of that was in this bill.

That is wrong.

Meanwhile, Republicans are cutting Medicaid, cutting food assistance, and raising costs across the board for health care. Our communities deserve better. Enforcement must come with accountability. Funding brutality while stripping away health care and food support from working families is simply wrong.

I will always fight for you."
