President Trump signs Secure America Act

6am Coverage

UPDATE (10:37 AM): President Donald Trump signed the GOP-led Secure America Act to fund ICE and Border Patrol through 2029 Wednesday.

The bill tops off a months-long fight over funding for immigration operations, and provides $38 billion for ICE and $26 billion for the Border Patrol.

"I'm thrilled to sign the Secure America Act to immediately and fully fund the Department of Homeland Security through the end of my term, so we won't have that to be talking about anymore...We'll give the heroes of ICE and Border Patrol, and that's what they are, the heroes for they have to go through to keep us safe, the support and resources they need to defend our borders, protect our homeland, and to keep America safe."

(CNN, KYMA) - House Republicans sent a $70 billion immigration enforcement package to President Donald Trump's desk Tuesday.

The move ends a months-long fight that exposed major cracks in the party.

The move will now fully fund the Department of Homeland Security for the rest of President Trump's second term. Specifically, it funds ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Republicans made the measure their top legislative priority this spring.

Earlier this year, Democrats successfully blocked Congress from approving funding for ICE or Border Patrol after federal agents killed two U.S. citizens in Minnesota.

The House passed the bill Tuesday by a vote of 214 to 212 on a party-line vote, and Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-Calif.) voted against it.
