DOJ creates $1.7 billion fund to compensate Trump allies

(CNN, KYMA) - The Justice Department (DOJ) announced Monday the creation of a $1.7 billion fund which would compensate allies of President Donald Trump.

It comes after court documents reveal President Trump is dropping his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS.

Trump, along with his two older sons, filed the lawsuit earlier this year over the leak of his tax returns from his first presidency.

The fund would pay those who claim they were unfairly investigated by the Biden Administration.

It's an unprecedented move where the administration could compensate those supporters with taxpayer money.

The DOJ said the president will not receive any payments, but will get a formal apology.

The lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice, which means he cannot file it again.

Trump sued the IRS in his capacity as a citizen and not as president.

A former IRS contractor, Charles Littlejohn, was sentenced to prison for leaking the tax records of Trump and thousands of others.
