L.A. Mayor Karen Bass calls for investigation into President Trump’s Iran comments

LOS ANGELES (NBC, KYMA) - Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass had some strong words for President Donald Trump Wednesday night after he, for the second time, talked about Iran possibly attacking Los Angeles or San Diego.

Mayor Bass denounced his message and said she is calling for a congressional investigation into his comments.

Here is what President Trump told the crowd at a campaign event Wednesday night:

"But you want to see trauma? You want to see problems? And I said it the other day: let them hit a missile into San Diego or Los Angeles on the way. Let them hit - you want to see a horror show? You want to see problems? Let them hit San Diego. Let them hit Los Angeles, and you want to see some bad things happen? You want to see a country that would be in free fall? We're not going to let that happen. We protect our cities. We protect our country. We're not letting that happen."

The president recasted his earlier, incendiary statements about Iran potentially hitting L.A. and San Diego with missiles at Wednesday night's event.

His original remarks, made at a campaign rally in Nebraska, where he seemed to refer to what would happen if Iran had a nuclear weapon, saying, "They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego."

However, during a rally in Texas, the president did add, "We're not going to let that happen."

Still, the comments led to a strong response from Bass, saying she is calling on a congressional investigation into his remarks, suggesting they are tantamount to inviting an Iranian attack.

"To do that makes us look ridiculous on the world stage, but it also gives a green light to Iran the nation that he chose to attack, the green light to attack our cities," Bass expressed. "And so then to re-traumatize us by making outlandish statements is just really something that is incredibly dangerous and irresponsible."
