Nithya Raman wins L.A. mayor’s race

LOS ANGELES (NBC, KYMA) - The NBC News Decision Desk projected Nithya Raman, a Democratic Socialist, is the new Mayor of Los Angeles, defeating incumbent Karen Bass.

With more than 75% of the votes counted, Raman is leading Bass 52.1% to 47.9%.

Raman, a progressive Democrat, gained ground on Mayor Bass quickly during the campaign by railing against the "broken status quo."

She will now lead the country's second-largest metropolis.

Bass is a former six-term congresswoman who served one term as Los Angeles Mayor.

This result means three major U.S. cities will be led by Democratic Socialists, with Raman joining New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Janeese Lewis George, who won the mayor's race in Washington, D.C. this week.

In response to her win, Raman's campaign released a video statement, where she paid tribute to her predecessor, and promised to earn the trust of her constituents.

"I love this city, and I love its people, and I cannot wait to get started on building a better future together with all of you. Thank you so much, Los Angeles," the mayor-elect expressed.

Bass also posted to social media saying, "Thank you, Los Angeles. Serving as your mayor has been the honor of my life."
