Candidate women hope to inspire other women

With elections around the corner, these women candidates hope to inspire other women one day

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) -

The 2022 Imperial County election season is underway and there’s a group of women making their way to the ballot once again which has the potential to transform local school boards and city councils.

Several female candidates running for office in imperial county came together to highlight women empowerment and the importance of having diversity in elections.

Seventeen local women from different political parties took a picture in front of the El Centro courthouse to show that there is power in numbers.

A show of force from several local women in imperial county saying regardless of political party it's important to vote and a strong calling today for women to come together.

“I am calling on all women to make sure you get those ballots and you make them count honor those women who have fought for us not just to have a vote but to be in this race to be candidates,” said Yulil Alonso- Garza, Brawley Union high school district candidate.

“Nobody, nobody can represent a woman like a woman can," said Angie Peña, El Centro elementary school district candidate.

“Powerful, inspiring, non replaceable we are at a time where our women are strong and we are going to stand together," said Sonia Carter, El Centro city council candidate.

In the picture the candidates are wearing white as a symbol of a reminder of the women's suffrage movement.

“We need to be united and also declare that we are pure of heart and I think wearing white is a symbol in honor of them," said Alonso- Garza.

For these women August 18, 1920 is an important achievement. When women were able to vote for the first time under the 19th amendment and representing women empowerment in imperial county is important.

“It’s important for this community to our country because this country is not made just of men, it's made of men and women," said Peña.

“Our audience is the people it doesn’t matter what gender you are but we are just letting you know that our females as females we have voices and we are going to be heard," said Carter.
