Japan’s birth rate plummets

TOKYO, Jap. (CNN) - The number of babies born in Japan is set to drop to another record low this year, according to the country's health ministry.

For the first time since records began in 1899, births will fall below the 800,000 mark.

Authorities are basing this trajectory on data from January to October of this year.

That's as the period already saw a 4.8% drop compared to the same time last year.

According to public broadcaster NHK, the ministry said the pandemic have dissuaded people from marriage and pregnancy.
