City rules in favor of raising pride flag
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The City of Calexico rules in favor of raising a pride flag at city hall even though some locals are opposed.
The votes came in Wednesday night, four in favor and one member against the agenda time.
Locals took the stand saying this decision will make them feel more appreciated in their city and loved for what they stand for including Calexico Mayor Raul Ureña who identifies as transgender.
But others were in disagreement with the decision saying the city should focus on other issues. Like a local who spoke against the item.
“You want to have a pride month flag... where are you going to put it... where are you going to put this rainbow flag... where is it at... you want to have a flag don’t you," said Rebecca Lemon.
Other locals spoke about what it means to them.
“I support this and I am honored to have a mayor that is going to be standing up to the whole city and saying hey we are going to do this,” said Ismael Arvizu.
The mayor said the pride flag will be going up on the city flag pole with a small celebration that is yet to be announced.
