El Centro Police conducts impairment detail for Cinco de Mayo
EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The El Centro Police Department (ECPD) said there has been an increase in DUI cases and will have extra officers patrolling the streets on Cinco de Mayo.
Cinco de Mayo is a mexican celebration and just across the border it’s usually celebrated with drinks but law enforcement will also be out that day to keep the valley safe.
This year el centro police department will be extra aware of the streets due to an increase of DUI cases have increased by 50 percent this year.
“We are having enforcement operations on that day during the evening hours... to specifically to target people that are driving intoxicated ... it’s a D-U-I patrol basically,” said William Yu, El Centro police officer.
El centro police officer William Yu says he's been working with the department for 15 years and has never seen this many d-u-I's.
“There is a lot more traffic accidents that are DUI related and a lot of the officers are doing a lot of arrests... an increase of blood alcohol,” said William Yu.
