Suspect arrested in connection to four fires in Calexico

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Calexico Police Department confirmed they arrested one man accused of starting four fires.

A string of fires in Calexico, now officially ruled as arson.

Police released a video of the possible suspect just one day after the fires that happened on Thursday, March 30.

That's how they were able to find him.

“He left behind two shopping carts and he started to go eastbound on Zapata street... as he went eastbound Zapata street he changed his clothes... to basically camouflage his appearance and that was another factor what was instrumental on getting him identified,” said Sean Acuña, Calexico Police Department.

The first fire started by the New River.

The second fire was next to a clothing store at Calexico outlets.

The third at a house shed and the largest fire was at a cold storage facility.

“Once he was taken into custody... he was brought to the police station and during his interview he admitted responsibility for all four arsons that occurred on March 30th,” said Acuña.

The suspect is currently being held at the Imperial County Jail on seven counts of arson.

The Calexico Police Department says they will be filing paperwork later this week, therefore we will not be identifying the suspect until he is formally charged.
