Man found with gunshot wound, another man nearby says he heard the whole thing

New details of a shooting that happened just a day after New Year's - 13 On Your Side's Vanessa Gongora spoke with a man who shares what he heard

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - In developing news, Yuma resident Kevin Robertson was sitting at Carver Park when he heard shots fired during an attempted homicide and says he heard the whole incident unfold.

Robertson says it all happened so fast and knew what he heard wasn't fireworks Monday night.

He was sitting right across from Carver Elementary School when shots were fired around 11:30 p.m.

"One of the other guys was in a car and he said 'what's up now?' And then it was shots fired, like maybe three to five shots. Rapid. You know, consecutive behind each other and then I heard somebody take off like run," describes Robertson. "Then I looked toward the bridge, over toward Avenue A and there was a guy running but was firing at the car so they were returning fire to each other."

Robertson says it was too dark to see what the shooter was wearing.

"The guy that was in the car, his car got hit a couple of times but he just turned up A and went in the other direction and right after that sirens came," continues Robertson.

The shooting happened on 13th Avenue and 5th Street.

A 36-year-old man was found with a gunshot would and taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center and later flown to a Phoenix-area hospital.

Sergeant Lori Franklin, Yuma Police Department's (YPD) Public Affairs Officer says the victim is in serious but stable condition.

She says during the night is when more crime happens and it's important to be aware.

"Again avoid dark areas. Avoid alleyways if you can," explains Sgt. Franklin. "The biggest thing is just stay safe. You know, be in groups. Don't walk alone."

Sgt. Franklin says as of now, no suspects have been arrested.
