Purdue Chancellor mocks Asians, issues apology

WEST LAYFETTE, Indi. (NBC) - Purdue Northwest Chancellor, Thomas L. Keon, has apologized after making racist Asian language impressions onstage during the schools commencement.

Keon issued the apology Wednesday after receiving criticism for mocking Asian languages in an apparent impression.

While on stage, Keon said the made-up words were "an Asian version" of a previous speech.

This was at the event for the school's summer and fall graduates.

Keon wrote in a statement Wednesday:

"I am truly sorry for my unplanned, off-the-cuff response to another speaker, as my words have caused confusion, pain, and anger."

Keon also wrote that he "did not intend to be hurtful."

Furthermore, he added that he would be meeting with members of the student government.

Keon will also meet with the PNW Respecting Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity team to understand and address issues of the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community.
