Last Confederate statue removed in Virginia

RICHMOND, Virg. (NBC) - The last confederate statue owned by the City of Richmond was removed Monday.

Workers dismantled the statue of confederate general A.P. Hill, who died in the Civil War.

Now, the focus shifts to moving hill's remains which were burried underneath the monument.

Those remains will move to a cemetery in Culpeper.

The statue will then go to the Black History Museum.

From there, the statue will be with the other Confederate monuments, also taken down.

However, a legal challenge is underway from some of Hill's descendants who say they don't want the museum getting control of the statue or the marker.

As for the current site, the city plans to pave the area to help drivers navigate the cumbersome circle at the intersection.
