Sinema backs bipartisan bill seeks to improve Arizonans’ access to health care

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema co-sponsored the Ensuring Access to General Surgery Act.

In a press release, the bill is a bipartisan legislation to increase Arizonan's access to health care by making certain areas potentially eligible for a National Health Service Program.

Furthermore, the program will help recruit and retain general surgeons.

“Arizonans deserve access to high quality, affordable care close to where they live. By examining gaps in care, we can address shortages and improve Arizonans’ access to care,” said Sinema.

In addition, lack of access to general surgeons can accelerate or contribute to the closing of community and rural hospitals.

That is if and only if they cannot receive medical treatment close to home.

These obstacles can also create serious complications for patients who:

• Cannot afford or easily travel to other hospitals
• Worsen health outcomes
• Increase the cost of their care
