ICBOS remains committed to improvement of county’s Northend Region

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Imperial County Board of Supervisors (ICBOS) held a meeting to discuss the county's Northend Region.

During the meeting, the Board took two separate actions in their efforts and commitment to improve the Northend Region.

Comment letter to California Energy Commission

Firstly, they unanimously approved a comment letter to the California Energy Commission/

This is in regards to the Blue-Ribbon Commission on California Lithium Extraction draft report published on September 21, 2022.

In particular, the Commission's goal is to investigate financial and policy opportunities to bolster opportunities to extract lithium in California.

“The Board of Supervisors and County of Imperial will continue to advocate for the development of Lithium Valley for the sake of our County, residents, local economy, and our country as the U.S. currently only produces less than 2% of the world’s supply of lithium,” stated Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Jesus Eduardo Escobar.

“In addition, the process to extract lithium from geothermal brine does not compare to the open pit mining and evaporation ponds seen in other countries and is a reason why the potential lithium produced in Lithium Valley has been called the 'world’s greenest lithium.'”

$200,000 contribution to Salton Sea Authority (SSA)

Secondly, the Board also approved a $200,000 contribution to the SSA, a part of the Joint Powers Authority (JPA).

Moreover, the SSA is responsible for working on consultation and cooperation to oversee the comprehensive restoration of the Salton Sea.

“Much like our commitment to Lithium Valley, restoration of the Salton Sea continues to remain a priority for myself, my fellow Supervisors, and County Administration,” added Supervisor Plancarte.
