Adobe home caught on fire near Gowan Science Academy
UPDATE: YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A home caught on fire this early morning on south Pageant Avenue, across the street from Gowan Science Academy.
No one was injured but that almost wasn't the case.
Homeowner, Richard Ensign says the fire woke him up around 4 a.m.
He says he ran to Rural Metro for help then rushed back home to put the fire out.
The 70-year-old says before Rural Metro and the sheriff's department arrived, he attempted to put the fire out himself.
“I did everything I could, I threw sand, I threw water, I used 4 firehydrants and it just wouldn’t go out and it trapped me in there and blasted me out through a window," said Ensign.
Ensign recalls feeling like he wasn’t going to make it out of his home after his failed attempts of smothering the fire.
“I was looking for a way to go and I saw the big window and I started heading to it and that’s exactly the way it sent me because a big blast came right up my back and it was so hot I thought I was catching on fire, but I landed and nothing was burning," said Ensign.
The fire even spread to the side of a neighbor’s home and they say sheriff's alerted them to leave.
Batallion Chief Jeff Woodruff of Rural Metro fires can cause less damage if the surrounding areas are free of trash.
“Main thing is just kinda keep rubbish up around your house. This house, unfortunately, had a lot of stuff around it. There was an abandoned car that burned up in there.”
Rural Metro stayed on scene till about nine in the morning, putting out hotspots.
They say the cause of fire is unknown at the moment.
Rural Metro says in order to prevent fires from spreading all over your property, make sure your yard is free of unwanted items and properly throw away all trash.
