VIDEO: Migrants dropped off near Vice President Harris’ residence

(NBC) - In an unannounced change of plans, 101 migrants on two buses from Texas were dropped off this morning near Vice President Harris' residence.

Aid groups had been told to expect the migrants arrival this morning.

But in a surprise move, the buses did not go to Union Station where all of the other buses bound for Washington have arrived.

Instead the migrants were taken to a residential area near the Vice President's residence and the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Volunteers and aid groups had to change plans quickly to help those arriving and called the change of plans a "political statement."

"Today it was particularly different. For months we've been receiving migrants at union station which is a great port of transportation. But today we received a call at the very last minute that the bus was dropping them off in front of the U.S. Naval Observatory. So we all very quickly had to change our plan and come meet them here," Migrant supporter volunteer Kendra Blandon said.

"They are now going to a church which is a central location for them to rest and work on their next steps," Blandon said.

"So this morning our teams were ready at 5:30 at union station to receive the busses that we were expecting from Texas. We coordinate with agencies to tell us when the busses are coming and when to expect. But there was a last minute change made apparently by the state of Texas to drop them off intentionally here this morning without a heads up," Managing Director of SAMU First Response Tatiana Laborde said.

"I think it was intentional. I think the plan was from last night, from what i'm hearing from agencies, that the plan from the government was to drop them off here but not give any body a heads up," Tatiana Laborde said.

"They were not expecting to be left in this residential area for an even stronger political statement," Laborde said.
