Today is word literacy day

(KYMA, KECY/CNN)- Today marks international literacy day.

Every September 8th-- groups around the world focus on the importance of learning to read and write.

The united nations educational, scientific and cultural organization started the unofficial holiday in 19-67.

The organization says at least 771 million people around the world lack basic literacy skills.

They also point out the pandemic led to school closures and disruptions that likely caused even more learning declines and drop-outs.

To honor international literacy day--  go volunteer to read to children at your local library or help someone struggling to learn how to read or write.
