“Yuma German Fest” lets local resident celebrate family traditions
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY)- Michael Van Bibber and his family moved to the desert southwest last spring. Van Bibber never misses an opportunity to celebrate his culture.
"If you walk into my house, you would see all the German stuff I've got. A whole kitchen full of beer steins. And different knick knacks and figurines."
Being at his first Yuma German Fest, the sights and sounds take him back to his childhood.
"(Growing) up, my mom always made German food for us. Every Sunday we'd have a supper at home at like 2 o'clock. And it's yea,  kind of homecoming right here in Yuma."
Today, Van Bibber wears a German hat that belonged to his father, carrying the legacy that's been passed down on to him.
"My father passed away three years ago. And yea anytime wear something of his, it just brings back memories, love and you know stuff that, it'd definitely a family heirloom," said Van Bibber.
Yuma Civic Center Program Manager, Esther Markle said residents attending the festival were given an authentic experience of German traditions.
"They come and taste some peculiar food. We have bratwurst. We have schnitzel sandwiches. You're going to create a different pallet. Also, the entertainers are dressed very professionally. They travel all over the world. And so you're going to come in here and see some historic culture from the German society."
Adding that there's fun for all ages.
"We have games over there it's free to play them. We give out little pieces of candy. But it's important for us because what we're trying to do is make sure that when you bring your family in your car, you drive to Desert Sun Stadium, there's something for everybody."
