72-year-old dies in crash in Imperial County

Fatal car crash occurred on July 10 along Interstate 8, east of State Route 115

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - A 72-year-old male driver and the passenger of the car crashed into the center median of Interstate 8, driver was pronounced deceased on scene.

On Sunday, July 10 around 2:40 p.m., 72-year-old male driver and passenger Imelda Bongato were driving along Interstate 8 and eastbound of State Route 115 in a 2000 Toyota Rav-4.

According to the Department of California Highway Patrol, the Toyota left its lane of travel and entered the center median where the vehicle overturned.

The driver had fatal injuries and died at the crash scene and Bongato suffered major injuries and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Both the driver and passenger were wearing seatbelts and impairment does not appear to be a factor in the car crash.
