Huge fire leaves Tucson area under cloud of smoke

Nearly 20-thousand bales of hay went up in flames in a spectacular blaze in Tucson. The blaze created smoke so thick, it’ll take at least a day to dissipate.

The fire broke out around six Tuesday night at the San Xavier Co-Op Farm near the San Xavier Mission. It was still burning as of Wednesday morning.

Flames destroyed several outbuildings and hay barns, but didn’t hurt anyone.

It’s still unclear how the fire started.

Pima County issued an air pollution health watch Wednesday morning for the areas west and southwest of Tucson. Health officials say it will take some time for airborne soot and dust to settle.
