Debris continues piling up at Yuma border wall
Border crossings continue overnight as agents apprehend over 1,000 migrants a day - FOX 9's Adam Klepp reports
YUMA, Ariz (KECY, KYMA) - During the day, the border is mostly quiet.
The only evidence of migrants is the piles of debris left behind by nighttime crossers.
That's because when the sun goes down the Yuma border continues to be busy.
Migrants cross between the Andrade and San Luis ports of entry as Title 42 closed all land crossings at the southern border to asylum seekers.
Meaning in order to make an asylum claim, a right under U.S. law, they are pushed to illegally cross and find a border patrol agent to apprehend.
In May, Yuma agents apprehended over 33,000 migrants according to CBP.
From June 12th to June 18th they arrested more than 5,000 migrants from over 40 different countries at the border.
But despite Title 42, Remain in Mexico, and the dangers migrants face on their journey to the United States, they continue to show up in Yuma looking for a better future.
“I came to the United States for freedom. There is no freedom in Cuba. Here there is opportunity for people, and my son,” Guerrera said.
Yuma agents are on track to apprehend over 300 thousand migrants by the end of this fiscal year.
