PARIS (AP) — France’s interior minister has defended the use of tear gas to disperse fans amid disorder and chaos at the Champions League final in Paris, saying the move was crucial to prevent supporters getting killed. Gerald Darmanin was grilled by a senate commission and asked to provide explanations for the organizational fiasco outside the Stade de France in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, where Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 on Saturday. Darmanin threw his full support behind the police and security offers who were in charge of policing the event. He said that dispersing the crowd that had amassed near the stadium’s fences was the only way to prevent people getting crushed.
