Meeting held to discuss local water infrastructure issues

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - As the drought continues to put a strain on local resources, local leaders gathered Thursday to discuss the issue, a roundtable was held by U.S Senator Mark Kelly’s team.

Senator Kelly himself was not there, but those who were all agree more needs to be done regarding the continuing drought.

State representative Brian Fernandez was among those who came to the roundtable…

In the meeting, issues regarding local water supplies and infrastructure were discussed.

He discussed how Kelly’s work on the bipartisan infrastructure bill will help local resources going forward.

“He brought a lot of money for improving aging infrastructure here whether it be canals or pumps, many things along those lines,” Fernandez said.

Those involved with the agriculture community also came out, expressing just how much water they have to conserve because of the drought.

Yuma County Supervisor Martin Porchas also attended.

Expressing his concern for how much farmers have to do.

“The agriculture here in Yuma County, it’s our main economy and without water, we can’t have agriculture,” Porchas said.

Fernandez and Porchas weren’t the only local leaders in attendance.

Others who were there included Yuma City Council Woman Karen Watts, and Yuma County Board of Supervisors Chairman Tony Reyes.
