Doerr signs LOI

YC wrestler officially going to SW Oregon CC

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A Yuma area prep wrestler is officially moving on to greener pastures.

Yuma Catholic Senior Mikey Doerr is taking his talents to Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Doerr signed his letter of intent during a special ceremony held in his honor at Yuma Catholic High School on Wednesday.

He ultimately decided to become a Laker due to their competitive wrestling program, the academic support for his potential degree in business and 2 of his best friends already attending the school.

After transferring to YC from Yuma High School, Doerr had a stellar Senior campaign, notching 61 wins and 6 losses; with 42 pins in the 113 pound weight class.

The Shamrocks standout finished as the state runner-up in both his Junior and Senior Seasons.

Doerr gives a lot of credit to his success and direction in life to his Head Wrestling Coach and Athletic Director Jeff Welsing.

"He's taught me, like almost everything. Basically from wrestling and being the person I am. He's helped me since I was just a little kid, who's guided me that way. He, he did help me, like, decide whether I was going to come to Yuma Catholic or not. And he was like, fully supportive about it. So he was like the decision is yours. I'm going to help you if you do go. If not, that's OK."

On top of his 167 career high school wins, Doerr was named an All-American by the National High School Coaches Association.
