Yuma locals prepare for Tax Day deadline
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA/KECY) - Tax day is fast approaching. April 18 is the last day to get your taxes filed on time. Even those who file for an extension must submit an estimated payment by the deadline.
If you haven’t started preparing your taxes yet, you may want to focus on electronic filing this year.
"The IRS is still dealing with a backlog from tax returns from last year, primarily paper returns. That’s why we’ve always been pushing people to file electronically and use direct deposit. This year, we’re pushing that message even harder," says IRS Special Agent Brian Watson.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website has a list of third-party websites that offer a free filing option for anyone with an income of $73,000 or less.
Watson says most IRS employees will be back in the office next month, but that paper taxes still take longer than electronic ones.
One Yuma local says she utilizes both options.
"Well, it depends. If they owe me money, I file electronically. If I owe them money then I print it out and send them a check," explains Yuma local Joan Hadley.
If you file for a tax extension, it pushes your due date to October 15, but you still need to pay by April 18.
"It’s not an extension to pay. So, if you’re someone who is going to be owing money, you’re going to have to make a payment, an estimated payment at the point," says Watson.
Some though, will get lucky, and expect a refund.
"I’m ready. I did it all right," explains Yuma local Mayra Johnson.
Remember, the IRS will only initiate contact with you by postal mail. They will never call or email you about your taxes. If you do receive those calls or emails, the IRS says you should not reply and be wary of scams.
